Markdown

Markdown is a plain text document format created by John Gruber. The purpose of which was a simplified syntax for text-to-HTML conversion. With the Pandoc tool this opened up doors that allowed markdown to be transpiled to several other document formats. Markdown has become a defacto standard in software development for documentation, as popularized by GitHub.
